Forest – lots of it, along with the world-famous final climbs of the Tour of Flanders: Stage 2 of our three-day race is a key component. After the starting climb to the highest point in East Flanders, what awaits you is an asphalt descent followed by a long gravel climb that will secure your place in the group.
For those who’ve been at the start of the Mountain Bike of Flanders the last two years, you’ll surely recognize the spirit of our previous editions’ Sunday stage in this stage, even though the long flat Schelde part has been completely cleared out. We again pass by the Paterberg, the Oude Kwaremont and the “old Oude” Kwaremont, before we enter, via the endless Pensemont, the famous playground: the Kluisbos.
Those who’ve been there before surely know what to expect here: steep climbs, often on swampy forest trails, and descents where you can seriously raise your adrenaline level. Singletracks, a few carpets of endless roots, a half pipe, a drop and the “Bermuda Triangle” – direction plane wreck: we stuff it all in. And we made a point of it to add some new technical sections.
After the Kluiszone, we figured out how to add a short but very tough climb (the little brother of the Muur van Borzée, for those who are fans) and an extra forest section in the return to the Hotond Sporthotel. If you still have some strength in your legs at the end, then you’ll surely look forward to the nice climb through the Scherpenbergbos where you get the chance to deliver that final blow to the rest of your group. Another loop around the Hotond Arena, and the finish line is waiting!
Fewer kilometers, but more altitude meters: if you ask us, this ride is still a super tough task to tackle. But no worries, you’ll be able to top off your strength afterwards at the free pasta party, and if you need to have your legs loosened up for the next stage, you can (at a modest cost) swing by our masseurs!
