CONCEPT & SCHEDULE
Mountain bike of Flanders:
Three days of racing against the clock through the Flemish Ardennes' most epic terrain.
Alone or as a duo!
The overwhelming success of our first edition screamed out for a sequel: from 10 to 12 August 2018, you can reclaim your biker-heart in the Flemish Ardennes. Racers, recreational riders of all levels, kids and spectators alike will all be catered to once again to ensure a memorable event. In between the races, everyone is welcome to take a stroll through our extensive expo zone.
The ingredients for our 3 Day Stage Race remain the same: cobblestone climbs with names such as that of a clock, fairytale forests and picturesque villages, knitted together with the most beautiful trails that the Flemish Ardennes have to offer. Our recipe for success changes only slightly for this edition: a new formula for our prologue and new trails for our shortened Saturday stage. Enjoy the feast!
The number of participants is limited.

10.08.2018 - 3 Days Prologue
40 km (3 timed specials for a total of 11 km) - 550 alt
The prologue has seriously grown over the past twelve months: it’s no longer three, but forty kilometers long. Eleven of these kilometers, spread over three ‘sections’, are against the clock. The kilometers connecting these time trial sections can be ridden at your own pace, so that you can fully recover while enjoying the gorgeous views. Along the way, you’ll get to experience – among many other things – the famous Mater and Haaghoek cobblestones. At the end of the prologue, you’ll get a taste of Saturday’s new stage finish.
Duos work together as a team. Times of both riders from the timed sections will be combined.
11.08.2018 - 3 Days Stage 1 • 127 km
127 km (2 laps), 2160 alt, start at 12 noon
Saturday’s stage remains the longest of the 3 Day Stage Race, thanks to 2 rounds of 63 km. Right after the start, you’ll already be crossing the peak – via offroad - of the legendary Koppenberg climb. Following the famous Leo Pironpad is the brand new highlight of the stage: a tough passage through the Muziekbos woods which will demand much climbing and bike-handling skills. The second half of the stage is also new for this edition. It starts off with a few long sections through undulating fields that connect the climbs. Here the wind can play a strong role. Towards the end of the stage, you’ll hit a long succession of short, steep ‘bumps’ typical of the Flemish Ardennes.
Participants who are registered as a duo will ride one round each
12.08.2018 - 3 Days Stage 2 • 100 km
100 km (2 laps), 1600 alt, start at 11 am
Our final stage is mainly on the same trails as in 2017. It will again consist of two 50 km laps, which start with a warm-up along the banks of the Schelde River followed by the first climbs around the Oude Kwaremont. Afterwards you’ll hit the ‘crème de la crème’ of our three-day event: the technically and physically demanding section through the Kluisbos forest, which contains a few extensive sections through private land. You’ll return again via the most famous climbs of the Tour of Flanders: the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg – both via offroad. At the end, we take you straight up the famous cobblestones of the Koppenberg.
Participants who are registered as a duo will ride one round each.
11.08.2018 - MTB of Flanders Fun Ride
Challenging terrain with start and finish at Oudenaarde’s Donkvijver pond. Expect lots of climbing as well as some gorgeous views of the Flemish Ardennes. Two distances: 54 km and 44 km.
12.08.2018 - Kids Series
Singletracks in the woods, short but challenging climbs, as well as wider paths for easily passing other riders: our kids course has everything to make for exciting racing.
Thanks to our partner DP-Solutions every kid participates for free!
11 & 12.08.2018 - Expo & Test Days
Between the races, you can test bikes from various manufacturers present at our expo that’s set up at the Donkvijver pond. Brands as Ridley, Specialized, BH Bikes, Devinci, Kuota and Zanatta were present in 2017.
1 x 40 km 3 'specials' • 11 km of which is against the clock
10.08.2018 - 3 Days Prologue - 40 km & 550 alt
SECTION 1 (3,2 km)
Warm up those calves! The first timed section is one you’ll want to tackle with ‘gloves on’ as you’ll immediately have to take on the offroad trails of the Katteberg and Wolvenberg!
SECTION 2 (4,5 km)
The longest and most versatile section of the three. A very technical singletrack, some power bits through the fields, a part of the Haaghoek cobbles and a challenging offroad climb at the end: definitely suited for strong riders
SECTION 3 (3 km)
After returning to Oudenaarde, there is an explosive final section: three kilometers of challenging high speed singletracks around the Donkvijver. Be sure to keep something for the end, because the finish is the same as Saturday and Sunday stages – up our ‘Donkvijverberg’ climb!
SUMMER BIKE TEST & EXPO DAYS 2017
11.08.2018 - 3 Days Stage 1 - 127 km & 2160 alt
The first climb that’s worthy of the Mountainbike of Flanders name takes you straight to the top of the Flemish Ardennes’ most famous hill: the Koppenberg. But don’t bother searching for the cobbles as you’ll be climbing it in the woods.
Tucked away in the shadow of the Koppenberg is the Elenebos. For cyclists, it guarantees a few breathtaking passages – thanks to its gorgeous panoramas, but also thanks to its climbing. Participants of our first edition will find some surprises on the singletracks!
The Leon Pironpad immediately became a cult climb for our first edition participants. It’s not just because it’s a tough climb but its difficulty is significantly increased due to its randomly laid out cobblestones that appear to be simply tossed about onto the ground.
In the renewed finish of the stage, you’ll ride a stretch of ridge that climbs from Oudenaarde to Brakel –seven times. Challenging bits everywhere, with famous names like the Eikenberg, Ladeuze, the Boigneberg and Berg Ten Stene.
The highlight (literally and figuratively) of Saturday’s stage shifts to the Muziekbos: located in Filip Meirhaeghe’s ‘backyard’, it incorporates both public and private lands to create a section that both climbers and descenders will find fingerlickingly good.
2 x 63,5 km 2 x 1080 alt climbing
12.08.2018 - 3 Days Stage 2 - 100 km & 1600 alt
Sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Aenean consectetur suscipit viverra. Morbi non arcu blandit justo pellentesque condimentum.
Legs still aching from Saturday’s stage? No worries as you’ll get about ten kilometers to warm up over the long off-road stretch along the Schelde River, a gorgeous strip of land that is equally typical of the Flemish Ardennes as its climbs.
You already know the picturesque village of Kwaremont from its famous Oude Kwaremont climb, as well as its namesake beer. On Sunday’s stage, you’ll also get a taste of its steep calf-burners nestled between the fields.
Without a doubt the longest climb of the three-day stage race: the Pensemont. Picture yourself suddenly in the real Ardennes…after minutes of climbing, you earn your reward which is kilometers of two-wheeled fun in the Kluisbos woods.
Paterberg is yet another name that sounds familiar to every cyclist. We’ve chosen a dirt road to ascend it that runs parallel to the cobbled climb. Tricky if it rains!
Got something left in the legs? At the end of our 3 Day Stage Race, we’ll once again send you over the Koppenberg. This time you do the ‘Bump of Melden’ up its famous cobbles. Lactic acid ALERT!
2 x 50 km 2 x 800 alt climbing

JAN DE LICHTE
No, you’re not imagining things: during this long forest section you’ll actually pass a thieves village, a ghost chapel and a downed plane. All silent witnesses in this private forest where film crew are often at work. Of all the passages from our first edition, this is the most discussed thanks to its singletracks, climbing and tire-sucking forest ground!
Dominique Strauss-Kahn, still remember him? During the second half of the stage, you’ll pass the place where the former French managing director of the IMF shared some world famous ‘endeavours’. You’ll probably ride past though without realizing since it’s followed immediately by a tricky descent.

• LIMITED NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS!
Is the Flanders Mountain Bike a race?
Yes. The Mountain Bike of Flanders is a three-day stage race affiliated with Cycling Vlaanderen as a category Open XCO event. After every stage there will be a published stage result and a general classification. Even though this event is a race, you are completely free to ride at your own pace – as fast or as slow as you like.
How does the team-system work?
Racers in duo ride Friday’s prologue together. On Saturday and Sunday, each team member rides a part of the course – like a relay race. In the stage results as well as the general classification, all the times of the teammates will be combined for a total time. More info on our relay system can be found in the course description of the stages.
How does the prologue work?
You ride a total of 40 kilometers that includes three timed sections. Riders start their prologue every half minute. This also applies to the timed sections where riders start every half minute. Your result is based on the sum of the times in the three timed sections.
The kilometers linking these sections are also marked but not manned by police or course marshals. You ride these non-timed distances at any pace you choose. Completing the entire 40 km route is mandatory though.
Duos ride the prologue together. The totaled times of the 2 teammates during the 3 timed sections are added together for your team’s result.
Can I register without a racing license?
Yes, you can. If you have no racing license, you can purchase (in addition to your registration fee) three one-day licenses of five euros per license.
The 15 euros is to be paid during online registration.
Attention: If you only have a recreation or cyclotourist license, you will also have to purchase three one-day licenses. This covers your insurance during the stage race. Racers with licenses as youth, elite without contract, masters, etc. do not have to purchase day licenses.
How old must I be to enter the race?
You must be at least 18 years old to participate in the Mountain Bike of Flanders.
Exception: Licensed youth category racers can participate.
What if I cannot participate due to illness or injury?
Your registration can be transferred to another person through to 15 July 2018. As of 16 July 2018, we will charge 25€ for administrative costs.
For transfers, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Is there camping in the area?
All participants are granted access to free camping that is walking distance from our main event area where the start/finish is located. You’ll need to contact us well in advance to reserve your spot. Please send an email to email@example.com indicating if you come with tent, camper or caravan and include the license plate number of your vehicle. No advance reservation = no access to the campgrounds. The campgrounds are equipped with toilets. Showers, food and beverage options as well as bike wash you’ll find at our main event location. Electricity and water connection.
Can I freely choose my start position?
This is only possible for the prologue on Friday, where you can specify your desired start time between 1 pm and 5 pm during registration. We’ll do our best to assign you a slot that’s closest to your request. Results from Friday’s prologue will determine your start position on Saturday (group start at 12 pm). The overall classification after Saturday’s stage determines your start position on Sunday (group start at 11 am).
Is there a time limit?
Yes, there is a time limit for the stages, which will be announced later. If you finish outside the time limit, you will not be included in the results. You can still race the remaining stage(s) although you will not be included in the general classification.
Can I participate with an E-bike or cyclocross bike?
For those competing on E-bikes, we have created a separate duo-category. Competing with a cyclocross bike is prohibited.
